Thrilled to have joined the UC Center of Excellence on Migration and Health (COEMH). Through this group, I hope to make connections to researchers who have established connections with migrant populations. At our retreat this month, someone articulated a question I had held for a long time: Why isn't migrant health considered part of global health? Uniquely among global health researchers and institutions, the UC Global Health Institute includes researchers interested in migration and health. Generally migrants, effects of migration on health, and health issues relating to migration, are not considered part of global health. Why? It seems quite self-evident to me anyway that migration issues are a critical component of global health. I look forward to exploring these questions and to developing effective communication campaigns for these populations.
